Keeping up with all the news coming out of Africa can still be a bit of a task on the net these days. I find great stories about the continent and diaspora all over the internet (the best being at africandynamo of course), but finding truly solid sources for information can be difficult. There are a few sites that I find myself visiting all the time though, and I'm in the sharing mood! So without further ado here is a short list of the best sites for news about Africa:
Allafrica.com features a traditional news-magazine layout, with its front page displaying top headlines updated frequently. They cover a lot of news; the site features pages focusing on business, politics, technology, the environment as well as many other topics. They also cover articles that that look at Africa in relation to the rest of the world, and these broad-perspective articles are my favorite feature of the site.
To sum it up, if you’re looking for a broad source of news about the goings-on in Africa, allafrica.com is a great source. If you want to avoid sorting through the massive waves of news, they’ve even got an editors pick section that focuses on just the interesting stuff.
Vanguardngr.com is a great source for keeping up to the minute news on events in Nigeria and the surrounding region, with a focus on politics, business, sports, and entertainment. The site features these cool latest news update tickers that feed snippets of information 24 /7.
The site’s focus on Nigeria lends its articles a certain focus and perspective, but they regularly break news about events taking place all over Africa, and feature special reports about events that affect the world at large.
Bottom line-great news source with a focus on eastern Africa.
BBC News Africa is a staple for Western based African news. The site is really a subset of the BBC’s UK online paper, and it uses the same page format and design. Topics covered include business, health, science, technology, entertainment, and sports. The news can be broken down by country and easily translated in twenty seven languages.
Saharareporters.com is an online community of international reporters and social advocates that provide commentaries, features, and news reports from a Nigerian-African perspective. The site is a great source for articles about Africa.
Newstimeafrica.com was founded to bridge the information gap that existed around news coverage on Africa, and provide a balanced medium for Africans to get their news from one authoritative source. The site definitely accomplishes this goal, with a page that is constantly updated and features a scrolling ‘breaking news’ ticker that adds a real up-to-the-minute feel.
